Langley teacher-librarians are leading the transition from traditional school libraries to a Library Learning Commons model to better meet the needs of the ever-changing world of education. The learning opportunities available in the Library Learning Commons (LLC) go well beyond those offered by the traditional book collections of the library. The LLC is meant to be a flexible learning space that meets the learning needs of its school community and where library users will find a wealth of trustworthy, reliable sources of print and digital information, technology, and so much more.
In addition to housing rich book and resource collections, the Library Learning Commons will be the “hub” of a variety of student and teacher activities. It may be a quiet reading or study place or it may be a busy, noisy room of active learners designing and building together. One day it may be a theatre for an author presentation in person or via Skype, and the next it may house engaged student researchers reading, listening and sharing information gleaned from books, online resources and each other. The expertise of a qualified teacher-librarian is key to the successful management of the library program to promote reading, design thinking, inquiry and effective technology integration.
