The Assembly of First Nations has put together an outstanding Education Toolkit that offers 22 learning modules on topics such as residential schools, cultural competency, and more. Downloadable user guides and unit plans for each module are available on the Assembly of First Nations website. There are many great resources and unit plans available for educators for both use in their classroom as well as for your own personal learning.  Please note, given the nature of some of the topics covered, it is extremely important that educators are reviewing the lessons, units and materials carefully before implementing in your classroom with students.

This virtual session will introduce the 6 Graphic Novels that have been shared with all Secondary English Departments. With All About Me being decommissioned as of September 2023, K to grade 7 teachers are invited to come and learn about how to use the new myBlueprint platform: Spaces EDU. Participants will learn how to create individual spaces, document student learning, label artifacts with curriculum tags and how to easily meet the new Ministry reporting order in Core Competency Reflections and Goal Setting. Participants should bring a charged laptop. Educators are invited to LaSalle College Vancouver on October 20, 2023, for customized workshops in the areas of Art, Media, Design and Culinary Arts. At LCV, we understand the critical role that educators and counsellors play in shaping the future of our students. They have curated a series of workshops designed for Educators to share what is currently being taught at the post-secondary level based on industry needs and trends. Some examples are Stage and Set Design, Story Telling and Gaming, and Chocolate Making.

Vancouver Giants | Be a Giant Program K-7 | More info
The Vancouver Giants is offering its ‘Be a Giant’ program for classroom teachers in the K-7 grade-level. It’s a two-week interactive outreach program that takes a holistic approach to health encompassing physical, mental, emotional, and social avenues. The objective is to give students the tools to live a healthy and active life by encouraging them to ‘Be a Giant’ at school, at home, and in the community. Farm to School BC Grants Launch: October 3rd, 2023 | More info
The annual Farm to School Grants are open from October 3rd until November 15th. These grants are designed to support K-12 schools in the province of B.C. in developing their school food programs. They offer a smaller $1,000 grant and a larger $3,000 grant. The $1K grant is ideal for projects and investments with relatively smaller goals, while the $3K grant is for larger, more elaborate projects that require additional time and planning.

Mini Food grant applications for the 2023/2024 school year are now open | Due date Oct 27, 2023
All BC teachers who plan to teach Food Explorers, Food For Us, Passport to Healthy Living transition lesson plans, or BC at the Table during the 2023/2024 school year are eligible to apply for a Mini Food Grant. Teachers are eligible for up to $125 to provide tasting experiences that align with the teacher guide for your chosen program. Funds for the 2023/2024 school year will be awarded in November.
Apply for the grant by following this link and creating or logging into your online portal account. The grant application can also be found under the “form” tab in our online portal. Be sure to apply by October 27th to receive a grant for your classroom! For any support reach out to the registered Dietitians at nutrition@bcdairy.ca.

National Data Collection Pilot | Bike Walk Roll Week Oct 16-20, 2023 | More info
There is an upcoming initiative called Bike Walk Roll Week (BWRW), taking place October 16-20, 2023. With funding from Infrastructure Canada’s National Active Transportation Fund, Green Communities Canada (GCC) is conducting the first-ever National School Travel Data Collection pilot, being tested in British Columbia and Ontario.
This pilot aims to collect important school travel data by encouraging elementary and middle schools to conduct hands-up surveys using BikeWalkRoll.org, a quick and easy-to-use surveying tool. Participating classrooms will be entered into a prize draw for a number of $50 e-gift cards.
