HONOURING TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

As we continue our individual and professional commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, her are two SORA recommendations to further deepen and engage with learning/teachings from Indigenous authors. Five Little Indians, by Michelle Good
Form: Fiction, Length: long, on SORA in audiobook and e-book
About: Nominated for countless awards and part of this upcoming season of Canada Reads- Five Little Indians is a must read. This book has been one of the most popular reads on the Langley School District SORA App! Taken from their families when they are very small and sent to a remote, church-run residential school, Kenny, Lucy, Clara, Howie and Maisie are barely out of childhood when they are finally released after years of detention. Along and without any skills, support or families, the teens find their way to the seedy and foreign world of Downtown Eastside Vancouver, where they cling together, striving to find a place of safety and belonging in a world that doesn’t want them. The paths of the five friends cross and crisscross over the decades.

We All Play, Julie Flett
Form: Picture Book Length: Short
About: Joyous book for ages 7 and up. Animals and kids love to play! This wonderful book celebrates playtime and the connection between children and the natural world. It includes a glossary of Cree words for different animals that feature in the book.

We will critically examine our personal biases, attitudes, beliefs, values, and practices to facilitate change. Each one of us can contribute towards truth, reconciliation, and healing.
