HONOURING TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

Truth and Reconciliation Week 2022:
Register now to participate Sept 26 to 30, 2022. Centred on the theme “Remember the Children,” the week will be dedicated to memorializing the children lost to the residential school system and honour survivors and their families. An expanded program with age-appropriate material for students in Gr. 1 to 12 and all sessions will be held virtually on Hubilo.

Creating a Class TEAM: K-5 with Alexandra Baxfield [On-Demand Learning Feature]
This virtual session is for teachers who have not yet created a class team. What you need:

  • A computer with Teams.
  • A second device to participate and follow along with the virtual workshop.

Literacy Credentialing – August 31 [Register]
The purpose of the credentialing workshop is to outline the duties and responsibilities of provincial assessment markers, establish valid and reliable assessment processes, and credential educators for the marking of the provincial assessments.

Whether your interest is in learning more about assessment, engaging with provincial standards, or getting certified for future paid marking; this is an excellent professional development opportunity.

Hang 10! Catch the Wave into the School Year! Welcome back from summer! Ride into the 2022-2023 school year with confidence and enthusiasm by attending Summer Boot Camp. Together we’ll explore valuable strategies for the development of an empowering learning culture in your classroom. Sessions are designed at different levels for K to 12 classroom teachers and for all TTOCs.

All these offerings have been designed to assist you in the development of a framework for your teaching, with an emphasis on the first six to eight weeks of the new school year.

Join us for our annual school year kick-off with the Langley School District’s Summer Institute. This year, we’re going online to provide more flexibility for our teachers as we offer them a day of learning designed to be relevant to all K-12 teachers. Experience this cornucopia of professional development opportunities. Take in one session, or pack your day with our amazing workshops.

PRESENTERS NEEDED! – Pre-K & Kindergarten Conference 2022
We’re excited to announce that Connecting the Pieces: Pre-K & Kindergarten Conference returns in person this year!

This year’s event will take place on Friday, October 21, 2022, at RE Mountain Secondary. Sessions are 1.5 hours, and there are three sessions in the day. We will have a backup plan to go online just in case.

SORA (more info):
Great news! Almost 2000 graphic novels, comics and manga for our K-12 audience have recently been added and are now available in addition to the over 50 magazines for K-12 multiple subject areas. All resources will have universal simultaneous access (everyone can access at the same time).

Just a reminder that SORA access levels are:

  • Juvenile: Kindergarten-Grade 5
  • Juvenile and YA: Grades 6-8
  • Juvenile, YA and Adult: Grades 9 and up

The SORA LBOY eBooks and Audiobooks collection are now been updated as well for summer reading, just in time for staff reading over the summer.

Great tip: If you enter your FVRL library card number in the SORA app, you can access the entire FVRL digital collection. If you do not have a FVRL card, you can register online. Happy reading!

The FVRL Summer Reading Club is now active! Check out the FVRL poster and be sure to visit the public library this summer! Please share with your students.

AntiRacism Resources:
An inventory of over 200 anti-racism resources is now available through Focused Educational Resources. These anti-racism resources have been compiled by a diverse group of BC community organizations and evaluated by Focused Education Resources using criteria that ensures resources are aligned with the BC curriculum. These resources are available in a searchable format through the ShareEdBC platform. This inventory includes recommended resources on anti-racism, human rights, diverse cultural experiences, and the history and contributions of IBPOC people in Canada. Links to this resource have been added to the SD35 Diversity Resource Online which can also be found in the TCS sites.

Floating Classrooms (more info)
Get your class outside for a dynamic and engaging experience! Ridge Wilderness offers educational half-day, full-day and overnight canoe trips to school groups. A variety of prescribed learning outcomes can be included upon request. See a sample of our offerings listed below…

Floating Classrooms – Pitt Lake and Alouette Lake day trips range from 2.5 – 5 hours long and are flexible to meet any time requirements your school may have. All equipment as well as highly trained guide(s) are provided in the cost of the trip.

BC Edtech Startup Bringing Place-based Online Education to Schools Across the Province (more info):
All BC public schools will be able to access Live It Earth’s bilingual, place-based online education programming for K-7, thanks to an agreement with Focused Education Resources.

Environment Grants (more info):
Applications are open for the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation grant. The grant is open to primary and secondary schools and supports environmental education projects, green spaces, gardens, tree planting and more. Applications close July 15.

2022 Leadership Superconference – October 21
Save the date! The theme for the 2022 Leadership Superconference is “The Better You Teach, the Better You Coach” and will take place at the Langley Events Centre. Headlining the event will be Cori Close, who will share both her passion for positive team culture creation and her vast basketball wisdom in an on-court session. Olympian Allison Forsyth will also be featured, speaking to the important issue of Safe Sport and how we create a positive environment for all involved. Registration opens September 1.
