Artwork Contest with $150 prizes for Indigenous Youth | Theme: Indigenous Traditional Knowledge & Medicine | More info
To celebrate the rich cultural and heritage traditions of Indigenous people of Canada, FORED is sponsoring its annual artwork, photography and now video contest with $150 cash prizes for Indigenous youth aged 5-18. This contest is a wonderful opportunity to find a mentor in the Elder community to pass down this important knowledge to Indigenous youth. No commercial use of entries is permitted. Contest deadline is May 19, 2023.
Additional Traditional Knowledge Bursary: For educators or parents with older Indigenous youth possibly exploring post-secondary choices in sustainable natural resources management at BC’s Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT), FORED also sponsors a Traditional Knowledge bursary of $500 each year (since 2010), administered by NVIT.

Acknowledgement and Empathy with Dr. Jody Carrington | On-Demand Learning Feature
“Empathy and acknowledgement go hand-in-hand.” Join us in our penultimate session with Dr. Jody Carrington, as she takes us on a journey through understanding the importance of acknowledgement and empathy, and how they impact our daily lives, and those of our colleagues, our families, the children we work with, and even people we may never meet. She discusses the three keystones of what does and does not make for an acknowledgement – be they Territory Acknowledgement for our land-based Nations, or for others around us. Jody also shares with us five incredible tools that are effective for using when someone is dysregulated.

Insignia Library Software Training for TLs & LTs | May 19 | Register
This training is for all district staff (library technicians and teacher librarians) who work with out library software. This full day face-to-face session will provide you the knowledge and the hands on experience to learn the key features of the Insignia Library System so you can manage your library following the training. There will be time to learn together, experiment and ask questions about the new system.
ACT CPR and AED Training Workshop | May 19 | Register
Local CPR instructors will train phys. ed teachers in CPR-A followed by our Opioid Overdose Response Training and train-the-trainer session, enabling teachers to deliver the ACT High School CPR and AED program at their schools. Certificates provided by the training agency and ACT Foundation.

This September Simon Fraser University Advanced Professional Studies will be launching a Fostering Belonging: Supporting Diversity and Inclusion in Education Graduate Diploma program. This two-year program will engage learners with opportunities of inquiry, collaboration and reflection on diversity, inclusion and belonging in education. This program will consist of weekly online evening classes on Tuesdays and a one-week online or in-person (your choice) for the Summer Institutes in August 2024 and 2025. At the end of successfully completing the program, educators will be eligible for a 5+ TQS upgrade; gain a strong collaborative network with other British Columbia educators; and equip themselves with new inclusive practices. Apply early due to limited online and in-person spaces in the program.

British Columbia-wide Youth Climate Activism Award 2023 | Applications open Apr 22 – May 18, 2023 | More info
Students in any grade can apply in demonstrating devotion to taking meaningful steps towards improving the outlook for our planet with respect to climate change. Students who are making a difference will have an opportunity to be recognized. The submission must take the form of a film of up to 5 minutes or a 500-word essay or a combination of text and photo essay, that shares the applicant’s passion and commitment to their climate activism. Cash awards are as follows: $1000 for students 14 to 19 years of age; $500 for students under 14. Visit their website here.
CST Foundation is currently accepting applications for $150,000 in bursaries | Apply Here
The myBlueprint has partnered with the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation (CSTF) in providing 25 bursaries in the amount of $6,000 to support access to post-secondary education. The bursaries are for current Grade 12, first-generation PSE students (students whose parents did not attend post-secondary education). Applications are open from March 1, 2023 to April 14, 2023.

Daytrippers is a 100% volunteer-run Canadian charity offering funding for virtual, in-class and out of classroom trip experiences for K-8 schools from low-income or remote communities across the country. The funding is for educational experiences for up to $25/child to a maximum of $1,500 per application and the application process is quick and simple! Langley City Film Festival Call for Entrants | More info | Submit here
The Langley Arts Council in the Township of Langley is joining forces with City of Langley in organizing a film festival for October 20-22, 2023. As part of the festival there is a component for high school students. All high school students in BC are invited to partake in the festival by creating and submitting 1-5 minute short films by the end of June. The theme of the festival is “transitions”, which should be relatable to a wide audience, given our shared experience over the last few years. Submissions deadline June 30, 2023.
