Designed for Grades 6-8, this event will showcase five thought-provoking short films by Indigenous artists in Canada, followed by an interactive conversation with filmmaker Lisa Jackson (Anishinaabe), moderated by Ronnie Dean Harris (Stō:lo/St’át’imc/N’laka’pamux).
Complete with lesson plans and teacher resources, the livestream centres on Indigenous realities, Canada’s Indian residential school system, and what reconciliation means.

Intermediate Social Studies Activities: Beyond the Textbook With Larissa Kondo [On-Demand Learning Feature]
Often, social studies classes take the form of reading comprehension assignments. In this workshop, I will share different strategies and free resources teachers can use to explore social studies with their intermediate students. Strategies will align with BC social studies competencies and some Indigenous principals of learning.
Save the Date! Odyssey 2023! February 10
As part of our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, Odyssey will once again be Indigenous focused. The day will be structured similarly to last year’s Odyssey where ALL District employees will participate in school and department teams at their respective sites. Like last year, while there will be some keynote sessions, there will also be an opportunity for staff to choose where to focus some of their learning. While staff do still have the autonomy to choose their professional development on February 10th, we are once again hoping for almost full participation in our main Odyssey session. Make Science and Math come Alive with Gizmos – November 22 & November 23 [Register]
Gizmos are interactive online simulations and case studies for math and science that power inquiry and understanding through hands-on learning and experimentation. With more than 450 Gizmos covering STEM topics for grades 3-12, students can dig deeper into subjects and really understand challenging concepts as they form, analyze, and test ideas to find solutions, just like real mathematicians and scientists. Coast Metro K-8 Number Sense Series – Nov 23 and Dec 7 [Register]
Join Marian Small for a three-part professional development series on Numeracy. In this series, Marian will present classroom teachers with specific ideas and strategies for teaching number sense for grades K to 8. The concepts and ideas introduced will also be linked directly to Marian’s book entitled, “Making Math Meaningful.”
SD35’s Read-Speak-Champion virtual author Series – Nov 29 [Register]
As contemporary educators, we have a responsibility to share diverse stories and varied perspectives with our students. The Read. Speak. Champion Virtual Author Series is dedicated to spotlighting Canada’s BIPOC and LGBTQ2IAS+ authors.
Register your class (grades 8-12) for a virtual author session with Trinidadian-Canadian YA novelist Liselle Sambury. She’ll be talking and reading from her debut fantasy novel, Blood Like Magic, a Governor General’s finalist, as well as sharing about writing process. Her books include both fantasy and horror. Please note there will be opportunities before and during the session for students to submit questions.
NEW! Making Learning Fun with PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs – Dec 8 [Register]
Research shows that students learn most effectively by participating in meaningful real-world activities. This professional development workshop features PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs, an experiential learning project that helps grades 4-8 students explore the world of business by developing their own entrepreneurial ventures. Students design products, business plans and marketing materials and then display their business projects to friends, family and the school community. All resources (student workbooks, teacher manuals, parent information and video suite) are provided free of charge to teachers by the Langley School District.
During this session, teachers will:
1) Explore how to engage students of all interests, abilities and learning styles with PowerPlay’s project-based learning techniques and new program supports.
2)Integrate material into different subject areas and align with blended learning options.
3) Learn about new dynamic and creative options for showcasing student achievement.
4) Receive practical tools for engaging and supporting parents.
5) Consider how students can capture and reflect on their PowerPlay learning journey.
Presenter Bio – Bill Roche
Bill Roche is the creator of PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs and works closely with Langley schools to support implementation of the program. He specializes in designing turnkey standards-based resources for K-12 classrooms related to entrepreneurship, financial literacy and social responsibility. His highly engaging learning model makes it easy to differentiate instruction for diverse groups of learners. With an energetic and entertaining style, Roche captivates his audiences and inspires with real-life stories that feature practical, easy-to-implement solutions for the classroom. Numeracy 10 Credentialing – Jan 7 [Register]
The purpose of the credentialing workshop is to outline the duties and responsibilities of provincial assessment markers, establish valid and reliable assessment processes, and credential educators for the marking of the provincial assessments.
Whether your interest is in learning more about assessment, engaging with provincial standards, or getting certified for future paid marking; this is an excellent professional development opportunity.
Supporting Grieving and Bereaved Students – Jan 24 [Register]
The Child and Youth Bereavement team from the Langley Hospice Society will guide us through a presentation that will explore how children experience and express grief, how grief may vary between different ages and developmental stages, and how teachers and other school staff can provide support to children who have experienced the death of someone significant in their life.

Come join us for a book study – Five Little Indians by Michelle Good. This fictitious novel follows the lives of five different children who were forced to live at a Mission school from an early age and denied contact with their families. The outcomes for each individual vary depending on their ability to face past trauma as well as their willingness to seek help to resolve the issues that have plagued them since childhood.

- Culturally Responsive Mathematics Assessment – this three-part webinar series is offered through the Indigenous Math Education Network and focusses on how connections to land, story, community and math guide us in creating culturally responsive assessment practices. The first webinar took place on November 2 but interested teachers can access the recording once they register. The next two sessions will take place on January 25, 2023 and February 22, 2023.
- Engaging all Learners in the Middle Years – Middle years educators in BC are invited to join in this three-part interactive webinar series about engaging all learners in the middle years. Sessions have a blend of current thinking, examples from practices, and time to process and personalize ideas. The next session is on November 21, 2022.
- Early Childhood Education Professional Development Series – This three-part webinar series is themed around early childhood education, with a specific focus on fostering social emotional development and the well-being of children in the early years. The first session is on December 10, 2022, with future sessions on February 11 and June 3, 2023.
- What Counts in Primary Literacy? – This virtual session will take a look at what really counts in primary Literacy instruction. The next session takes place on February 9, 2023.

JABC TechWorks – Technology for Good – December 6-8th – Grades 9-12 (register here)
Back for the 7th year, JABC TechWorks gives BC students the opportunity to explore tech and tech-enabled careers in British Columbia. This year’s program is centered around Technology for Good, how technology has and can continue to improve the lives of people around the world, when used in a safe and positive way.
JABC has partnered with VFairs to provide a virtual conference experience for students that is immersive and lifelike. By guiding their Avatar, students will join breakout sessions, visit information booths, and interact with guest speakers. The platform allows educators to monitor and assess student participation. The live schedule is flexible and open for students to attend in class or on their own. Plus there is pre-recorded content available on-demand starting later this month.
JABC is proud to once again be participating in the upcoming Career Education Society Conference on November 21 & 22 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. The JABC team will be offering information from our booth in the foyer.
Fraser Valley Regional Library Fanfic Frenzy Writing Contest – all ages (more info)

LEARNING RESOURCES
The School Physical Activity – Physical Literacy Project (SPA-PL), a multicomponent, school-based health promotion initiative for B.C. elementary schools led by Sport for Life.
SPA-PL provides both in-person and online professional development opportunities to build the capacity of B.C. elementary school educators to increase their confidence and competence in delivering quality physical activity and physical literacy opportunities. The project is being prototyped across a diverse subset of school districts and schools in British Columbia, and SD #35 is taking part in it.
New iPad Teacher Resources
Within the Apple Education Community — a hub for educators using Apple devices that launched last month — are new Everyone Can Create projects, designed to “empower educators to build their creative teaching skills and deliver engaging learning experiences on iPad,” Apple said.
New Everyone Can Create content includes:
1. Design with Shapes in Keynote to help students visualize anything they can imagine, from math concepts to works of art
2. Animate with Stop Motion using Photos and Keynote to tell compelling stories with everyday objects
3. Create Editing Effects with iMovie
4. Write Your First Song using GarageBand
