KEY RESOURCES IN LANGLEY

HONOURING TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

Video Recording of Kevin Lamoureux speaking to Langley educators: Yesterday, school staffs, along with some district staff, had the opportunity to attend a virtual session on Truth and Reconciliation with Kevin Lamoureux.  This was the first of a 4-part series within our district-wide initiative of “Ensouling our Schools.”  This was an incredibly powerful session.  We were able to record the session so that any staff in our District could have access to the learning.  We encourage you to watch this 1 hour session which includes rich learnings from the Truth and Reconciliation journey thus far.

Trigger warning – information that is shared in the presentation deals with the abuse and trauma experienced by Aboriginal children in residential schools and the ongoing trauma for survivors and their families. This information, while incredibly important to discuss and learn about, can be disturbing, so I encourage you to prepare yourself emotionally before proceeding. Please click HERE to see this session.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is One Step on a Long Journey:  In this 48-minute video, Murray Sinclair, former senator and former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, talks to CBC Radio’s Unreserved about the September 30 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On its eve, Sinclair shares his belief that reconciliation will not be achieved in his lifetime, but states, “if we make a concerted effort…then eventually we will be able, someday, to wake up and, to our surprise, find that we are treating each other in a way that was intended when contact was first made.” A video worth watching and sharing! Access it through the link above.

CBC Podcast- The Road to Reconciliation:  “The Road to Reconciliation,” features Bob Joseph and Maurice Stizer as they reflect on whether Canada has finally reached a moment of national reckoning following the discovery of 200 children in unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Interviewed by journalist Piya Chattopadhyay, Joseph and Stizer speak to the long-awaited action plan in response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and the generational impact of unmarked graves being investigated and found across Canada. More importantly, they share their views on what genuine reconciliation should look like for individual Canadians and their governments.

A great interview on CBC Unreserved with Rosanna Deerchild with former Senator and TRC head, Murray Sinclair

Historical, Systemic and Intersectional Anti-racism: From awareness to action – more info
The Faculty of Education at UBC is offering a FREE course that will systemically cover and uncover implicit and explicit forms of historic, systemic and institutional racisms and their colonial and intersectional impacts on marginalized peoples and their communities in the past and in contemporary times.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of the hegemony of racism and how it is embedded and experienced in every day interactions and relationships in all facets of society and its institutions.

Learners from across disciplines, professions, organizations and communities will be challenged to think critically about racism and to move from denial to awareness, action and dismantling institutional and systemic racism so as to create lasting change.
