Tell us a Story | On-Demand Learning Feature
Who doesn’t love a great story? Students love to listen to and tell a variety of stories. This workshop will capitalize on that enthusiasm as participants learn a variety of techniques that will assist students in planning and creating their own stories about themselves, their families, and community. During the session, participants will have an opportunity to explore the use of a variety of manipulatives such as puppets, storyboards, toys along with digital tools to support your student’s storytelling skills. Come and be ready to engage in the story.

Come meet with other educators to discuss how the Reggio Emilia approach is a perfect fit for teaching numeracy and how it is represented in the BC Early Learning Framework. This session will include information from the BC Reggio Emilia Inspired Group of educators, examine ties to the BC Early Learning Framework, provide practical examples of materials and activities, as well as give you the opportunity to visit classrooms.

With All About Me being decommissioned as of September 2023, K to grade 7 teachers are invited to come and learn about how to use the new myBlueprint platform: Spaces EDU. Participants will learn how to create individual spaces, document student learning, label artifacts with curriculum tags and how to easily meet the new Ministry reporting order in Core Competency Reflections and Goal Setting. Participants should bring a charged laptop. Both dates will have the same session content. Only sign up for one.

This session is for Secondary 8-12 teachers who want a better understanding about how to support their students to use Spaces for Core Competency Reflection. Participants will be shown a demo student account and will be walked through the steps of how students can upload content and store evidence of learning and thinking.

UBC MEd in Math Education and MEd in Science Education | Applications now open
UBC is now accepting applications for the next fully-online Masters of Education (MEd) cohort programs:
Beginning Sept 2024 and open to all teachers K-12. A excellent opportunity for collaborative professional development for teachers across the province. We encourage teachers to apply in school or in district teams. A degree in math or science is NOT required. The program enables teachers to qualify for TQS Category 6 Pay-scale Increment. Application Deadline March 25, 2024.

This year’s IT4K12 will be held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre. What to Expect at IT4K12 is an Exploration of AI: opportunities and implications for teaching and learning, what’s new in Teams and Paths for Privacy Impact Assessments: new tools and resources. Digital Resource Highlights: NFB Campus and Media School; Live it Earth; French Resources; Book Creator will be covered as well as Building Cybersecurity Awareness. Take Our Kids to Work Day is Coming Up | November 1, 2023 | More info
Take Our Kids to Work Day takes place on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Founded in 1994 by the Learning Partnership, it has become a national annual career exploration event with more than 250,000 students, 18,000 teachers and 75,000 organizations participating every year.
This event provides students in Grade 9 an opportunity to experience a day in the life of their guardian’s or relatives’ careers. Take Our Kids to Work Day was strategically designed to encourage youth to begin to chart their own education and career path. Edge Factor is offering a free live webinar on Oct 24, 2023 to help educators in providing tools for students and access to resources for Take Our Kids to Work Day. Register here.
BC Student Film Festival 2024 | More info
IBCSFF is an amazing annual film festival dedicated to recognizing the incredible student filmmakers we have across our province. Each year students are invited to submit their short films/animations/music videos and more to the BCSFF for a chance to win awards and incredible prizes. The BC Student Film Festival itself is an incredible opportunity for student filmmakers to meet, collaborate, and learn together through a variety of engaging workshops, which this year will be sponsored by Vancouver Film School. The Award Gala/Film Screening will occur at the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. This year’s festival will be held on Friday May 24th, and Saturday May 25th, with the film screenings and awards occurring on Saturday.

New Entrepreneurship and Innovation Project | More info
Our District’s new Entrepreneurship and Innovation Project that leads to student participation in our annual IDEA Summit has launched and the Teacher Guide and Student Booklet should have been shared with teachers through your school admin. Below you will find a link to a folder that contains PDF versions of the Teacher Guide and Student Booklet as well as some other teacher resources that go with the project including a couple videos and a power point for the Logo and Slogan Business Plan activity. We are in the process of having hard copies printed in the SBO Print Shop and every Grade 4 to 7 teacher in the District will be soon receiving a copy of the teacher guide as well as one copy of the student booklet. Student booklets for classes can either be printed at the school level, or schools can order student booklets for their classes directly through the SBO Print Shop. Costs for these student booklets will be covered by Instructional Services.
