Middle School Literacy Conference | October 25, 2024 I Register
Come join your Middle School colleagues from around the District as we gather together to discuss best literacy classroom practices, resources, supports and intervention strategies for middle school learners!  Literacy is the responsibility of everyone in a Middle School setting, but teaching literacy is also hard work. Let’s work together to explore how we do that together and what that looks like in our Middle School in Langley.

Basic First Aid (New Name for OFA Level 1) | October 25, 2024 I Register
The WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid course is an 8-hour program, including coffee and lunch breaks and is designed to provide life-saving first aid skills to workers in industry. Successful candidates must demonstrate competency in practical skills and achieve 72% or higher on a multiple-choice exam. Certification is valid for three years.

NEW! Emergency First Aid with CPR “C”| October 25, 2024 I Register
This course focuses on the most common and critical life-threatening situations one may encounter. It provides basic first aid knowledge to care for adults, children and infants in case of an emergency. Upon successful completion, participants receive a national Red Cross First Aid Certificate valid for 3 years.​​ Now open to all SD35 staff.

The Greater Victoria Down Syndrome Society is hosting a conference Embracing Success: Educating Students with Down Syndrome on Friday, October 25th, 2024. This conference explores strategies for supporting students with Down syndrome and other disabilities. There’s a virtual option for attendees who aren’t able to travel to Victoria.

The BC High School Boys Basketball Association will once again be offering their Coaching Super Clinic at St. Thomas More on the Provincial Pro-D Day, Friday October 25.  Join other coaches from around the province for a day of learning the game, whether it’s x and o’s, team culture it doesn’t matter. This is the biggest and best clinic in BC!

TIE-BC is pleased to announce that registration is now open for Crosscurrents 2024! They have a wonderful selection of speakers lined up for their 49th annual Crosscurrents Conference taking place online on Friday, October 25th. Their keynote speaker is award-winning and best-selling author, speaker, and consultant, Monique Gray-Smith who is well known for her storytelling, spirit of generosity, and focus on resilience. They also have a wide variety of breakout sessions on topics relevant to inclusive education such as emotional health in our schools, understanding FASD, the importance of belonging, neurodiversity, trauma-informed classrooms, inclusion for deaf or hard of hearing students, selective mutism, and more. There should be something for everyone who is passionate about inclusion!

Do you love assessment and want to make some extra money for the holidays??  Grades 4 and 7 FSA coding (marking) will occur on two Saturdays this year: Saturday, November 16 and Saturday, November 23. Elementary/Middle: K-8 Vocabulary Pro-D Opportunity | Oct 21 & Nov 5, 2024 | More info
Instructional Services is excited to offer professional development training to Word Aware, a research-based program to equip educators with practical tools and strategies to enhance the written and spoken vocabulary skills of children in grades Pre-K to 8. The program offers resources to support whole class instruction as well as small group supports and interventions.
A free two-part dinner training series, led by speech pathologist Aoife McNamara, is available to interested school teams on October 21 and November 5 (attendees are required to attend both sessions). This training would be beneficial for K-8 classroom teachers, resource teachers, ELL teachers, SLPs, School Psychologists, ECE educators & Admin.

Bring your class on a journey like no other. Join Shizu and her Otosan (father in Japanese), as they traverse through snowy landscapes and tackle challenges together, eventually learning how to communicate their love. This play is A Little Onion Puppet Co. production, created by Vancouver based artists Shizuka Kai, Randi Edmundson, and Jess Amy Shead, and presented by Gateway Theatre.

Safe Drinking Water Foundation (SDWF) | A competition with $5,200 in Prizes | More info
Thanks to funding from Weston Family Foundation and RBC, SDWF is privileged and excited to hold the 2024-2025 Student Action on Canadian Water Attitudes Competition. Taking place during the 2024-2025 school year; this competition will be offered to kindergarten to grade 12 classrooms/schools across Canada, to investigate water issues in their community/area. The competition will involve students surveying their community to understand their community members’ knowledge and attitudes on a topic related to water, educating their community about the source of their drinking water and water conservation, encouraging the members of their community to conserve water, and presenting their findings in a report.

Media Literacy Week 2024 takes place October 21 to 25 and the Township of Langley Fraser Valley Regional Library is hosting a virtual author talk with Joyce Grant. Grant’s presentations are geared towards Grade 4 and 5 and will be a great opportunity to discuss the importance of thinking critically about the things we see and read online.
Program Description:
It’s vital that young people can evaluate what they see online. Joyce Grant uses real-life examples and powerful strategies to help kids spot fake news and understand how credible journalism is created. She will discuss being a journalist and how journalists gather facts to create articles. We also talk about the importance of accuracy and inclusiveness in journalism.

Event dates are:

  • Tuesday, October 22, 1 pm – 2 pm
  • Wednesday, October 23, 10 am – 11 am

The live presentations will be available via Zoom and schools, teachers, librarians, and families can register at the link above. The presentation will be recorded and posted for a limited time afterwards in case neither of the live dates work.
