In this CBC feature article, “48 books by Indigenous Writers to Read to Understand Residential Schools,” a Cree author based in Winnipeg, David A. Robertson, has compiled a list of 48 books, (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) for all ages to learn more about the experiences of Indigenous children forced to attend Indian Residential Schools. Each recommended book comes with a brief overview of the book and its suitability for different audiences.
The Ballantyne Project
With National Truth and Reconciliation Day coming up on September 30th in just a few weeks, we wanted to once again offer our video “Canada’s Residential Schools: The Survivors & Their Descendants”. This video, which shares some history of the Residential school system as well as insight into the on-going impacts for the descendants of the Survivors, has been widely used in the school system and by organizations as an educational tool. We have condensed our original video and it is now under 20 minutes. We encourage you to share this video with students, family, friends, co-workers, etc., keeping in mind that some of the information may be triggering and is also not suitable for children.

The Ballantyne Project also offers a 45 minute presentation called “The Invisible Segment of Canada” which is available in person or virtually for middle and high schools, small businesses and national organizations. During this presentation, Dwight Ballantyne shares his experiences growing up in a northern First Nation and the unique challenges and barriers he faced. It provides insight not available in textbooks or on social media and has been included in micro-credential courses for mental health professionals, school district professional days and as part of educational content for organizations looking to offer Indigenous perspectives for employees.

STOP! Collaborate and Listen! “Save – The Other – Plastics” baby!
Did you know… that you can recycle shiny wrappers like granola bar wrappers, fruit snacks, chip bags and even ziplock bags?
The bad news is that they cannot yet be placed into our regular recycling at this time, so most of these types of plastics end up in the garbage and in landfills.
The good news is that YOU (and your class) can do something about this! To learn more, please email Karyn Howieson at: khowieson@sd35.bc.ca There will be a Teams meeting on Tuesday Sept. 27th at 3:30pm to explain the details of the program if you’re interested in beginning this initiative in your classroom or at your school.

Strong Bodies, Strong Kids – Resources for K to 3
Safe Bodies Strong Kids is an Elementary Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (K to 3) developed by the BC Lower Mainland Child Abuse Prevention Educators group. It is an excellent resource for K to 3 teachers on this topic and supports this aspect of the PHE K to 3 curriculum. The link below will take teachers to the SBSK Classroom resources that can be used. There are two separate folders – a K folder and a grade 1-3 folder. In each folder, there is a manual for teachers as well as lesson resources including handouts and videos. There is also a third folder with some power points and resources from a series of workshops that LMCAPE ran previously. Primary teachers looking for more information or support in implementing SBSK or other aspects of the PHE curriculum can reach out to our District PHE K to 12 Teacher – Kim Haber. This information has also been shared in the TCS Team.Safe Bodies Strong Kids
