Join the most recent awardee o GRIFFIN’S Indigenous Studio Award, artist James Harry, for a talk about his most recent piece for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in collaboration with SOS Children’s Village BC. The talk will follow a Q&A led by Indigenous curatorial assistant, Emmett Hanly. This event is scheduled for September 30th from 1:00 – 2:30 PST. The event is free but registration is required.

Building Community in a Middle School Classroom with Madison McArthur [On-Demand Learning Feature]
This workshop will explore many different ways you can build a strong sense of community and camaraderie in the middle school classroom. We will explore team building games, language used by the teacher and students, and ways to utilize your timetable by implementing this within the core subjects.

Green Screens for Halloween – October 3 [Register]
Prepare for the making of a Hallowe’en video using green screens. During this session we will discuss the preparation and execution in creating a magical video: you will prepare your laptop (Mac) or iPad with files, and plan the timeline to get everything in place with your class.

Read. Speak. Champion Virtual Author Series – Leonarda Carranza – October 4 [Register]
As contemporary educators, we have a responsibility to share diverse stories and varied perspectives with our students. The Read. Speak. Champion Virtual Author Series is dedicated to spotlighting Canada’s BIPOC and LGBTQ2IAS+ authors.
Join Leonarda Carranza as she talks about and reads from her book Abuelita and Me, her picture book debut that explores a child navigating racism amid daily errands with her beloved abuelita’s support. Born in El Salvador and currently living in Brampton, Ontario, part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Leonarda Carranza has a PhD in Social Justice Education from the University of Toronto and has won multiple writing awards, including Room’s 2018 short forms contest for her piece, “White Spaces Brown Bodies”.

Indigenous Course Learning Community – Oct 12, Nov 30, Jan 18 & Mar 1 [Register]
This is the second year of this Professional Learning Community, and we are excited to invite returning teachers back, while also extending the invite to any high school teachers interested in being part of this community! This learning group strives to explore curriculum, content and teaching strategies that pertain to Indigenous Studies courses- specifically EFP 10-12, BCFP12 and CIS12. This teacher space will identify needs and specific areas of focus and then meet through the school year to learn with and from one another. Teachers are encouraged to commit to all four sessions. The meetings will occur at REMSS in the Library from 3:30 to 6:00pm. Dinner will be provided; gluten free and vegan options will be available.

 Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 – October 21 [Register]
The WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level 1 course is an 8-hour program, including coffee and lunch breaks and is designed to provide life-saving first aid skills to workers in industry. Successful candidates must demonstrate competency in practical skills and achieve 70% or higher on a multiple-choice exam. Certification is valid for three years.

The BC Council for Families presents this workshop that will “dive into The First Peoples Principles of Learning from the Early Learning Framework (ELF), discuss the impact colonization has had on the way we educate our children, ways to challenge the colonial structure that has been placed on education and explore ways to decolonize our practices, our classroom and ourselves.”  Fee:$35

National Autism Conference – November 15-16, 2022 (10am – 5pm ET) (more info)
Where: Virtual The National Autism Conference will bring people together to help inform a national autism strategy, including Autistic Canadians, their families and caregivers, provinces, territories, Indigenous peoples and other stakeholders. The discussions that will take place during the conference will help solidify priority areas for action for a national autism strategy, and identify possible short, medium, and long-term objectives. Municipal Election Toolkit – October 15, 2022, is Election Day in BC  (more info)
On that day, eligible voters exercise their right to vote for mayors, councilors, school board trustees (and, in Vancouver, park board trustees).
We developed an election toolkit to help you with strategies and questions that put children and youth on the agenda during this election.
If elected, how will candidates reduce rising vulnerability among young children? How will school boards monitor and ensure the inclusion of all school-aged children and youth in their local, neighbourhood schools? And how will all levels of government work together to expand affordable, quality child care in communities throughout BC?

Wilderness Skills Workshops (more info)
This fall we are adding a new offering to our Ridge Wilderness line up, designed with schools in mind, where we come to you. No transportation necessary!
Schools will have the option of half day, or full day sessions which can be customized based on your participants interests and needs. Each station takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, we are happy to facilitate a schedule to suit single or multiple classes! Just let us know what you have in mind and we will make it a day (or half-day) your students will not forget.
